“I’m about to give you a revolutionary tip,” Australian creator Shayne Spencer promises at the start of a recent TikTok.
The mother-of-three explains that she had just been to a birthday party where “they did that” and jokes that she is “upset that I didn’t think of it”.
So what is this game-changing party hack?
“Make the birthday cake at the beginning of the party”
“Any parents out there who are having a birthday party… make the birthday cake at the beginning of the party,” advises Spencer.
She promises that it “made all the difference” at the party she attended.
“Because not only is it not that hard to stick around at the end, there’s also no cake left.”
As a veteran parent/aunt/stepmom and (long time ago) child, I’ve never had a problem with making the cake at the end of the party, which is the usual way things go.
Party hard, ridiculous food, more parties, cake, then party bags (maybe)… and goodbye. But I see Spencer’s point. She’s advocating skipping the “cake hang” and just letting everyone go when it’s time to finish.
I love it… I just never thought about being a rebel and changing the routine.
One of the earliest viewers of Shayne’s clip asked: “But doesn’t cake mean the party’s over?”
Spencer replied, “Mom here just started handing out the party bags at the end haha people got the hint.” So there is still a ‘hint’.
“The next day’s dessert is my favorite”
Other viewers liked the idea.
“Let the kids lose the sugar,” one said, with another agreeing, writing: “Yeah, best way to do it… means people can leave when they want, instead of waiting until in the end, especially if you have small children.”
This parent liked the suggestion but had an objection: “I support this because then if the child has to leave early, they don’t miss it. But I don’t support any leftover cake. Tomorrow’s birthday cake is my favorite.”
Totally fair enough, especially considering the effort and cost of most birthday cakes.
Then, there was a viewer who could foresee a potential issue: “The problem with this is that everyone has to be on time. I am 37 years old and I have never been to, nor held any event where everyone is on time. Not even a wedding.”
A valid point… that sounds like a problem of theirs, which leads us to more cake!
