Val Kilmer was more than just a Hollywood legend – he was also a cancer survivor.
The “Batman Forever” star encountered throat cancer years before he died at 65 from Pneumonia on Tuesday.
Kilmer received his initial diagnosis in 2014, but was without cancer until 2017. However, Kilmer’s treatment, which included chemotherapy, radiation and two tracheotomies, permanently affected his health.
The film star opened for his health battle over the years, including in his 2021 Val.

VAL initially denied he had cancer in the throat
Reported was first reported by TMZ in January 2015 that Kilmer was taken to hospital after he began to bleed from his throat and was diagnosed with a tumor in the throat.
But Kilmer said in a statement at the time, “I didn’t have a tumor, or a tumor surgery, or any surgery. I had a complication where the best way to take care was to stay under the watchful eye of UCLA ICU.”
In October 2016, Kilmer’s “Ghost” Costa and “Darkness” Michael Douglas revealed that Kilmer had cancer – which Kilmer initially denied.
“I love Michael Douglas, but he is misinformed,” Kilmer wrote on Facebook. Kilmer also told his fans that Douglas “wrote to me a beautiful note asking for forgiveness” for what he said.
Val confirmed that he had throat cancer in 2017
Kilmer finally confirmed his diagnosis on a Reddit AMA in April 2017.
In response to a question about Douglas’s comment, Kilmer wrote, “He was probably trying to help me cause the press probably where I was these days, and I have had a cancer recovery, but my tongue is still swollen even healing all the time. Because I don’t sound my own normal, but people think I can still be under the weather.”
Later that year, Kilmer confirmed to Hollywood Reporter that he had been fighting throat cancer for two years.
In 2020, Kilmer told the New York Times that he did surgery after his diagnosis, followed by chemotherapy and radiation “that occupied my entire throat, and is still dry like bone.”
Val bowed to the cher during his battle for cancer
The actor of “Top Gun” said in his 2020 memory, “I am your huckleberry,” that his ex-girlfriend Cher (which he dated for two years in the early 1980s) was there for him when he was sick.
“One night, I suddenly woke up vomiting blood that covered the bed like a scene from the godfather. I prayed immediately, then called 911. Then I warned my lady. Cher went inside and got up,” Kilmer wrote in his book, according to people.
