Can scientific fiction be made?
In the “Eternal Sun of the Mind of 2004,” Jim Carrey’s character is subject to a memory-raising procedure to forget his ex.
But while the procedure seemed removed at the time, technology has closer to us the possibility of deleting painful memories from our minds – or at least, making them less painful.
According to Dr. Jonathan Rasouli, a neurosurgeon at the University Hospital of Northwell Staten Island, there are three front methods that can “silence” and “wet” traumatic memories, and they are used to help people with depression and PTSD.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
“TMS is like wireless T -shirt cables for your brain – but much more accurate,” Rasouli told the post.
“It is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields (like MRI) to stimulate specific parts of the brain, usually aiming at areas involved in mood regulation.”
Patients have a magnetic spiral location in their head, which sends pulses to specific areas of the brain.
“It is mainly used for treatment resistant depression, but researchers are now exploring its impact on memory of memory, emotional processing and addiction,” the rasoulo added.
According to DOC, theory – still in the early stages of testing – is that the target of certain brain circuits can change how people approach their memories.
He said that in the future, it can help people reformulate memory associations-“but perhaps limited to clinical environments rather than making memory deletion sets.”
Deep brain stimulation (DBS)
DBS is a “brain cardiac” which is currently used to treat Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, epilepsy, OCD and major depression.
Small electrodes are inserted directly into specific areas of the brain, where they send electrical impulses to structures that are involved in motion and mood.
“Some studies show that DB can affect emotional memory, reward processing and even reduce traumatic attraction – but again, they are the first days,” Doc said.
In the future, theoretically it can be used to “silence” traumatic memories, “but it is invading and is unlikely to become a random outpatient procedure at any time soon,” he added.
Propranolol therapy
Popranolol is a beta-blocker drug that is usually prescribed to treat high blood pressure-but researchers have also discovered that it can “wet” emotional “memories” and be used for therapeutic purposes.
“This is probably the closest analog of the real world to the eternal concept of the sun-but no current deletion of memory,” said Rasouli.
Instead of making you completely forget the memory, this “sleeping hit” makes it feel less vibrant or depressed.
“When it is taken before it remembers a traumatic event, Propranolol reduces the intensity of emotional response, essentially” by reprinting “less emotional weight memory,” the document explained.
“Has used for experimental treatments of PTSD, anxiety and phobia.”
